SDSM&T Summer Camps for Students

The School of Mines offers summer camps for students in grades 6-12 to explore engineering and science in fun, hands-on ways. The week-long camps include: geology, engineering, space, leadership, and computers. Scholarships are available and the forms are found on the Web site, along with registration, at: http://sdmines.sdsmt.edu/learn/youth. This is a great way for students to sample engineering and sciences. It also gives them a taste of what college life is like. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you think may be interested.

South Dakota Rising Scholars in Math and Science

The South Dakota Center for the Advancement of Mathematics and Science Education invites outstanding high school juniors to apply for participation in an all-expenses-paid, 4-day summer enrichment session at Black Hills State University. Current high school juniors who reside in South Dakota, are intellectually curious, and have a strong interest in math and science are encouraged to apply. Participants will interact closely with faculty members, exceptional teachers, and a select cohort of fellow participants. The goal is to enrich the academic preparation of the most promising high school mathematicians and scientists across the state. Students will expand their minds and make new friends with peers who have similar motivation, talents, and interests. More information

eCYBERMISSION Competition

eCYBERMISSION is a free web-based science competition sponsored by the U.S. Army for students in grades six to nine. Historically, South Dakota has enrolled a low number of students in the competition.

Here are some key points about eCYBERMISSION:
1.)eCYBERMISSION is a science, math and technology competition that rewards winning students each year with U.S. EE Savings Bonds -- more than 35,000 students have participated since 2002, and more than $4.6 million has been awarded.

2.)Students from 96 teams are awarded regional and national prizes between $2000 and $8000 each year, and the regional first place teams in each grade are invited to Washington, D.C. for the National Judging and Educational Event.

3.)The competition fits easily into classroom curriculum by introducing students to the scientific method and how to apply it in real-life situations in their communities.

4.)The U.S. Army started eCYBERMISSION in 2002 to spark student interest in science, math and technology and encourage them to pursue related careers.

5.) eCYBERMISSION has no connection with Army recruiters and does not track students after they participate in the competition.

Subject: NASA Engineering Design Challenge – Bring Space Into Your Classroom!

As NASA plans to return to the moon, plant growth will be an important part of space exploration. NASA scientists anticipate that astronauts may be able to grow plants on the moon in specialized plant growth chambers. Come participate and build your own lunar growth chamber in the NASA Engineering Design Challenge!

Through the NASA Engineering Design Challenge, elementary, middle and high school students will:
• Design, build, and evaluate lunar plant growth chambers
• Receive cinnamon basils seeds flown on STS-118
• Test lunar growth chambers by growing and comparing both space-flown and earth-based control seeds

Visit http://www.nasa.gov/education/plantchallenge to register and to receive more information about the NASA Engineering Design Challenge. You can also sign up for the NASA Express listserv to receive e-mail updates about the challenge and other NASA education activities.

Join the NASA Engineering Design Challenge and be part of space exploration by growing seeds flown in space!
